Do you own a car? Do you notice air bulges and air bubbles on your window tint? Do you see your tint fading or worse, peeling? Then it’s time to replace your window tint ASAP.
Cars and tints are inseparable in many ways. Tints provide comfort against the sun’s harmful rays. They also offer privacy while on the road.
But don’t go for the ultra-dark tint.
Some people over-tint their vehicles that they’re already breaking the law. And like any other car accessory, car tints have a shelf life. Thus, you need to know how to remove window tint properly when it’s time to replace yours.
But how exactly do you do that? Continue reading below for some of the best methods for removing dark window tint.
Regardless if you’re using classic tint or comfort series tint, there will come a time when it will start to peel. Sometimes, it may show discoloration, which affects its protection against UV rays.
In any case, removing your car tint can be simple. It can also involve simple items like your wife’s good old hairdryer. It is the heat coming from the hairdryer that will help you remove your old tint.
Start by heating the outer side of the window using your hairdryer. When heating the window, maintain a distance of about 4 t 6 inches away from the glass. As soon as the window becomes warm, you can start peeling off the tint.
The key is to peel tint from the corner. Since peeling can be challenging, alternate it with the heating. This will also keep the adhesive from settling back.
After peeling off the tint, take your razor and remove any small pieces left on the glass. If you’re having trouble removing them, use another round of heating with the dryer.
After removing the small bits, scrape off the adhesive using your steel wool. Seal the deal by rubbing some window cleaner on the windows. Use the paper towel to wipe off any residue.
Another fine trick to remove window tint is through the ammonia and sun method. Ammonia is perfect for removing tint but only during warm seasons. This is because it needs the sun to complement its cleaning prowess.
For this method, you will need a spray bottle, soapy water, a razor knife, and a black trash bag. You should also prepare some paper towels, fine steel wool, and cotton cloth.
Mix some soap and warm water and transfer the solution into the spray bottle. Next, take the black trash bags and cut them into large pieces. You want the size to be big enough to cover both sides of the window.
Spray the mixture into the outside portion of the window. Thereafter, cover the window with plastic bags. Move on to the inner side of the window and spray generous amounts of ammonia.
Let the solution sit under the sun for about two hours. The plastic bags will trap the heat, making it easier for you to peel off the tint.
Complete the process by peeling the tint using your sharp razor.
If you want something simpler, then the soap and scrape method is the way to go. Here, you will need some warm soapy water, a spray bottle, and some paper towels. You will also need a razor blade knife and a glass cleaner.
Using your razor, cut the corner of the tint to create a small tab. This tab will help you peel off the tint. Hold the tab and slowly peel off the tint.
If you leave small portions of the tint on the window, scrape them off using the blade. After removing the tint, spray some soapy water using the spray bottle.
This will help you remove the adhesive. Like with the tint, scrape off the adhesive using your blade. Give your window a shiny finish by applying the glass cleaner.
Cap it off by wiping the glass using your paper towels.
The steamer method is one of the simplest methods that are perfect for first-timers.
Prepare a steamer, and adhesive remover, and some water. You will also need a clean cotton cloth. Begin by filling up your steamer with water. Allow the water to heat up until the steam becomes visible.
Thereafter, use the steamer to heat the window. Start from the corner while holding the steamer close to the window. You want to continue until you can peel off the corner of the tint using your fingernail.
From there, slowly peel away the tint. Make sure not to leave any tint patches on the window.
Complete the process by applying the adhesive cleaner onto the window. Use the paper towel to apply and spread the cleaner.
Last but not least is the soap and newspaper technique. As the name of the method implies, you will need some old newspaper and some warm and soapy water.
It also requires some paper towels, a razor blade, and a bucket. Additionally, you will need a sponge and a glass cleaner.
Fill the bucket with soapy water and apply it to the window. Cover the window using the old newspapers and let it sit for an hour.
Let the newspaper soak and dry. Whenever you notice the newspaper drying, add more soapy water. After an hour, take your razor blade and start peeling off the newspaper.
You can also start peeling the layer of tint beneath. Repeat the process until you remove all the remaining tint film.
